EVERYTHING IS A VERSION OF SOMETHING ELSE

SELFISH BITCH

Traditional crafts such as crocheting and knitting are utilized as a means of contemporary expression. Disregarding the formal references and connotations of these crafts allowing the work to find its own limits and therefore letting the process dictate the form.

The process of excessive repetition and accumulation speaks of obsessive and selfish tendencies. Binging in question the idea of a pure indulgence in the material, a tension is then created between the care and dedication of the craft and the frivolity of “making for the sake of making”.

The basic scheme of knitting and crocheting is the idea of a moving line; penetrating surfaces and repeating patterns, which is similar to the concept of automatic drawing. Therefore, automatism and intuition are integral elements in the construction of the work.

The construction is composed of a sort of jungle of made up patterns which allude to a rupture with both concept and form. More than considering the piece as a whole, my interest lies in the nuances, the layers and the cluttered details that result from these hybrid processes. Textile elements and found objects are transformed into rough protrusions, soft lines, blurs of light and melted colours, which become the poetic expression of an accumulative process.

The innate qualities of each of the materials are further appreciated when they are juxtaposed with each other, resulting in a congruent and organic sculptural collage.

Finally, the process becomes the work and vice versa. The abstract formations reference their own properties of being, creating a narrative which expresses the qualities of the material itself. The appropriation and alteration of the material have become an investigation about the automatic processes, the dedication of the craft, and ultimately the creation of invented patterns.

Basic Needs/Creature Comforts

One of my first observations in Buenos Aires and La Plata was the presence of live animals in the city, the selection and quantity of available animal meats on my plate, and animals illustrated on the city walls by street artists. This, paired with the absence of domestic animals when one is traveling (not to mention the absence of the familiar), brought the idea of “creature comforts” to mind. Above simply referencing the literal word creature, creature comforts is a phrase defined to be the things that make one feel comfortable and at ease. Upon a visit to the La Plata Zoo, instinct and basic needs were added to this thought.

According to The Hierarchy of Needs, by Abraham Maslow, basic human needs start with physiological needs for survival. These include: oxygen, food, water, sleep, clothing, shelter, elimination and stimulation. Once these needs are addressed, the second tier of needs is related to safety. The third tier includes needs regarding love and belonging, the fourth and fifth reference esteem and self-actualization, respectively.

After observing the elephant at the zoo swaying to what seemed to be the soundtrack in its head and alpacas appearing to be in conversation with each other, I’ve extended these so called “human” needs for belonging, purpose, communication, education, etc to the animal kingdom. I’ve since been sorting through what beings (animal and human) actually need to survive, and above and beyond that, what do they need to live a full life.

This series examines the aforementioned as well as the similarities between animals and humans. Each pose is taken directly from a specific animal observed and translated to the human form. Additionally, the content and forms in the pieces relate specifically to my experience in Argentina – depicting the senses and feelings received from the culture that has so generously adopted me for this time.
