Susanne Kompast/ Transmisión/ noviembre 2023

Transmission

As if something had been dislocated, the imprint of a loose piece that we do not attend to, demands to be listened to. Something that, like everything that has not ceased, insists on appearing. The sculptures that Susanne Kompast presents as part of her stay at Corazón Residency may at first appear to be mere silent, static representations. It is enough to shake them to hear something inside them that strikes you. In the minimal action of shaking, as primitive as it is ancient, is concentrated a radical wager: that of taking something in one's hands, shaking it in the air, making it collide with something else. In these minimal gestures, a politics of listening is woven. A tactic of resistance that is disconnected from the story of feats and exploits, to compose a listening in the tenderness of that other memory of insubordination and disobedience, of alliances and resistance in which, perhaps, we can take refuge. In times of uncertainty, of painful memories that fold into the present, fabricating ghosts of terror, these works insist on the possibility of finding hollows in which to be and to remain collectively in the face of pain, our own and that of others.Therein perhaps lies the artist's generosity: to give the memory a place to be heard; to make room for the barely audible murmur. The invitation is to listen to the sound of the broken string of a story, as something that perhaps is not outside, but that each one hears bouncing, echoing inside, searching for a way out or simply sounding as a reminder of what was perhaps a path to follow. The call is to those of us who remain, to move the pieces until we find the most sensitive ways of experiencing memory, of intervening in the dispute for its representation. To navigate the contradiction of our context, the problematic situations that delineate our social structures or the complexities of what it means to coexist with others. To find that mismatch, the residue of that discordant tone, to amplify our disagreement with the modes of existence offered by our present.

"Gone with the Wind”

During my stay at Residencia Corazón I became involved with the history of Argentina, concentrating on the issue of the disappeared and the work of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, who have been standing up since 1977 and still demanding memory-truth and justice. As a possible way of engaging with their struggle, I worked on the idea of making a set of rattle-sculptures. The figures can be interpreted as a symbol of being a mother. The fact that these pieces are also instruments can make the suffering more audible by proposing to be in tune. During this time, I visited various symbolic places, such as the Museum of Art and Memory - "A space for raising awareness and transmitting memory that opens up the debate on human rights and art to society". The approach to the theme seeks to be present in my works, performances and in the concentration of the 30 articles of Human Rights. I suggest that the exhibition space of Residencia Corazon also becomes the appropriate place for this kind of transmission.

Florence To/ SEIRYN / octubre 2023

The project SEIRYN is a live performance with modular synthesis and self-built sound sculptures, combining the research developed during an artist residency at Residencia Corazón with field recordings from the Ecological  Reserve in La Plata.Exploring the areas around the Rio de la Plata Riverbank will encourage a better knowledge of the city's eco system as well as the recording of the living biodiverse environment as a method of data collection through fieldwork. The research will be used to develop and build a composition using field recordings from various bird species to dissect parts and influence new structures from the sounds studied. SEIRYN is questioning how we can build intersectional realities within language and generate playful processing functions from both human and avian semantics. A performance that experiments with live synthesis, incorporating field recordings weaved into abstract poems where vowels are playfully expanded as an expression of breath and resonance, evolving into rhythmical gestures. The sound performance by artist Florence To will experiment with live synthesis, incorporating field recordings of bird calls weaved into Cantonese poems. The poems are abstract, where the vowels are playfully expanded as an expression of breath and resonance, evolving into rhythmical gestures of birds and machines through harmonic oscillations. It is an exploration of intersectional sonic elements and the development of inventive processes to perceive communication through multiple elements of tonal language. SEIRYN is a poetic conversation bringing the identity of communication and integrity as anintersectional discourse.

Florence To is a multidisciplinary artist who creates sound and light installations, generative motion graphics, and scenographies with an architectural approach to spatial design. The Scottish-born Hong Kong artist researches psychoacoustics and phonetics, merging cognitive and emotional behaviours, in order to develop multidimensional processes in her practice. Her work aims to break down the barriers that exist between various artistic disciplines and foster multifaceted exchanges among communities within creative practices. She has established residencies and commissions globally, such as with the Berliner Festspiele, STRP Eindhoven, and Mass MoCA in Massachusetts, and has collaborated with sound artists Jlin, Felicia Atkinson, Rafael Anton Irisarri, and Drew McDowall.

Looking fondly at nature and the gentle unfolding of destinies makes us reflect on the workings of instinct. Is there no curiosity, insecurity or fear? Is the process simply repeating itself exhaustively for no reason?

In addition to these and other questions, I see here the attire of a small bird portraying the challenges of leaving the comfort of one's own nest, recognizing the challenge of being who one is. It takes the courage of self-acceptance and reading the essence we carry.

If the universe gives you wings, taking off is a mission, so trust yours and bon voyage, inside and out.

ENG
Morgan Craig (Philadelphia) is a painter, teacher and Master of Fine Arts in Painting at Philadelphia University. His travelling spirit has led him to exhibit and participate in residencies in Europe, Africa and China. "I believe that architectural structures, which act as both repositories and vehicles of memory, profoundly influence culture and identity by providing a tangible framework through which facets of a society can be expressed. Consequently, I have been inspired to create a body of work that addresses how the types of architectural buildings present in a given landscape influence identity. My work is not merely a method of documentation, but a socio-economic and socio-political commentary on the effects of arrogance, greed, free trade, outsourcing, deregulation, deterritorialisation, neoliberalism, obsolescence and international finance capital on communities around the world".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We could call the work of a contemporary artist, Morgan Craig, who is interested in unraveling what mysterious cultural identity is hidden behind the architectural structures, deposits in different latitudes: Africa, Russia, China, Armenia, Ireland, United States, travels creating documents. Thus he arrives expectantly in Argentina, La Plata. This unprecedented survey impulse-impetus has exerted, throughout his stay at the Corazón Residence, enough force to unearth the hidden territory nearby: the former Ice Factory of the Quilmes Brewery, submerged in the sweeping vegetation and the excremental, foul-smelling and toxic pack of pigeons of the adjoining shed, with an unfinished water tower like a great pillar. Towards the side of the Roca train track, appear through a gap, lateral landscapes, the footbridges and the scrapped pits of machinery of the former sawmill, like an inhumation of the successive sequence of buildings with meager foundations. In this sense, he arrives, impassively, to a space that is far away, behind him, the Melchor Romero Interzonal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, with invisible human presences, since they will not appear in his works as usual, but only in the existential state that they dictate to that suffering wall space. His firmness insists and undermines the past, the splendor of the Cooperativa Industrial Textil Argentina C.I.T.A. (Argentine Textile Industrial Cooperative C.I.T.A.), which today has been transformed into recovered artists' workshops. There its workers guide an unprecedented visit, with detailed anecdotes that draw-blurs the disintegration of work, until reaching the machine room, the spinning room, where Morgan settles with his gaze: the exhumation of the iron corpse, still vertebrate the skeleton of disused, disused reels.
It seems that the experience in Argentina is frozen in Swift, the former meat packing plant on the edge of Berisso's seedy New York Street.
With the various interpretations and speculations to which it has given rise, starting with visiting an ice factory, and ending with a refrigerator, the icy metaphor of the current indifference about a colossal abandoned space concludes. Morgan finally decides to paint his own interpretation of what is undoubtedly the best portrait of society.
His research takes shape on a linen canvas of human dimensions, without abysses, and begins in a work of an interior with color, stains, shapes, in the great tradition of Western art, with layers of paint that can be studied together with Simon Edmondson, for its atmospheres and outstanding pictorial workmanship. This artist with his numerous works tells the story of this singular project, which ghostly revises and projects working conditions: "arrogance, greed, free trade, outsourcing, deregulation, deterritorialization, neoliberalism, obsolescence and international financial capital, in communities around the world" -now also revealed in Argentina- as stated in his text: ÍMPETU.

*IMPETU: impulse, force directed to, onslaught, attack.
In: inward, sometimes also against.
petere: to turn to, to seek, to ask for.

He utilizado materiales

Me

emprendimiento llamado Flete Arte.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Travelling City

My work is a reflexion.

I focus my gaze on industrial constructive figures and places (open landscapes),

finding ways to work with both elements. I have used industrial materials, such as

ventilation ducts and measuring tapes, among others. I am interested in their

modular capacity and their brilliance to construct geometric, inactive and variable

forms. I create specific situations that I make concrete through sculptures, actions in

the landscape, audiovisual materials, photographs. Also with studies on the line,

limits, industrial traces, the ephemeral in relation to the human scale in the horizon

and space.

Dedicated to sculpture, I had the extreme need to move and transfer my art

wherever I needed to. I ended up specialising in transporting and arthandling works

and objects independently. I called friends for work and started a business called

Flete Arte. This has been a constant construction of work, something totally

necessary, done together with other artists, cultural workers and art producers in

general. Then I conceived Arthandler Chile, another proposal that seeks to function

as a support network for artists and that, for the moment, has worked in the setting

up of exhibitions.

I like to be in constant movement and Flete Arte allows me to resolve this as an

artist, developing a special eye, activating all my senses and working with my whole

body. But it also turns out to be a very emotional mission, with the natural fear that

comes with the moment of doing something very important, having to move

something of great value. I work with a responsibility. This could also be a constant

performance, a way of reflecting and solving practical problems of the objects

themselves. That is one of the things I have admired most, because of my own

interests as a sculptor.

Returning to my artistic production has been necessary after having learnt a lot with

the art of otters. I felt the need to return to sculpture and the search for new

learning. That's how I got to know the craft of jewelry, I was impressed by this new

world, which is now part of my life. I work with the same dialectics and functions of

the large format sculptures, but taken to the monumentality of small and brilliant

forms. I bring into play the perceptions of one as a person and those of the objects,

which lead to a new concept of spatiality.
